Strong turnout at Alberton CGA event

The last event will be held at Delta Park on July 30. Entries open on July 20 and will close on July 26.

Elvis Tau and Tristan Torr outran a strong field of athletes to claim the senior men and women’s 10km events at the 2022 Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) cross-country sixth league leg held at Alberton Dam on July 16.

Tau won his race at 33:05. He was followed 13 seconds later by Simon Sibeko with Sakhile Sangweni completing the top three.

Nedbank Running Club’s Torr crossed the line at 58:40. She was followed by Faith Mabhena in second place. Ntshatiseng Molefe completed the podium at 49:12.

A crowd of over 1 000 athletes took part in the event. The first race of the day saw Baswabile Molobela and Junior Miya cross the line first to win the boys and girls U8 1km race.

The other highlight of the day was in the boys’ U17 6km event that saw Johannes Morepe clinch the gold in a time of 20:27. Seasoned runner Nicholas Seoposengwe brought his prestige to win the senior men’s 4km in 12:21, beating Chris Mhlanga and Jayde Rosslee.

CGA’s PR and communications officer Nongcebo Siziba’s said most of the athletes raised their hands to be considered for selection for the team to represent the province at the nationals in August.

“With only one league remaining for the season before the CGA Championships take place on August 20, the athletes are fighting for the top four spots to be part of the provincial team to compete in the nationals.

“Athletes have to run at least three out of seven leagues plus the CGA Championships to be considered for selection to represent the province,” she said.

The Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC)’s Chelsea van Dyk clinched the gold in the girls’ U11 3km event while teammate Avah Brownlie came third in the girls’ U8 1km race. Benoni High Athletics’ Rhys Connor Sawyer claimed a silver medal in the boys’ U10 2km event.

The BNAC’s Andre Bredenkamp won the grandmaster men 65-69 category while Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC)’s Jabulani Nicodemus Ngwenya won the great-grandmaster men 75-79 race.
