Bafana set to grow himself more as a goalkeeper

His goal is to go to overseas so that he can develop himself more as a keeper.

After playing in front of over 3 000 fans at a local tournament, Bafana Mahamba knew he was destined to be a footballer.

The 26-year-old from Daveyton recalls being between the sticks for Majanja FC in 2017 at the Imbewu Enhle Youth tournament where his heroics led his team to a 3-0 win.

“Our first match on that day was against Garden Village and that game made me the goalkeeper I am today,” said Mahamba.

Mahamba has attributed his match-winning performances to the support he has received from his mom – from playing in local tournaments until now as one of the leading goalkeepers in the Easterns Super League.

Bafana Mahamba wants to grow his goalkeeping skills more.

“My mom, Josephine, bought me my first pair of soccer boots and I will be forever grateful for her support.

He mentioned that his love and passion for football started at a young age and from watching Real Madrid and Spain goalie Iker Casillas, Kaizer Chiefs’ Itumeleng Khune and the late former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Senzo Meyiwa.

“I used to lose track of time and come home late and that would always get me into trouble.”

Before joining Old Bens, he played for several clubs including Ababel FC, Sister Monica Sports Academy and Benoni Sports Academy.

“Old Bens has a lot of history, there is competition in all possessions.

“The style of play at the club is amazing and the team is very good in controlling and dictating the pace of the game.”

The youngster said Daveyton has a lot talent and that if footballers from the area can focus on nurturing it, they can conquer the world.

He added that goalkeepers are often underrated despite playing an integral role on the field.

“Goalkeeping is both physical and mental.

“As a defender, having a good goalkeeper behind you gives you confidence and that spreads through the whole team. Communication is also important because you can see the whole field. Therefore you have to be a leader,” said Mahamba.

He said his dream is to develop more and dreams of playing in Europe.
