Tenshinkan karate students do well at national championship

The students were then invited to the senior and junior national championship held in Sasolburg on June 3 and 4

Eleven members of the Tenshinkan Karate Benoni Dojo received their South African Martial Ryukyu Arts Federation (SAMRAF) East Gauteng colours.

The students were then invited to the senior and junior national championship held in Sasolburg on June 3 and 4 where they won 21 medals in total.

The dojo’s four Tenshinkan kobudo members competed with weapons for the first time and sensi Manyroad Mkansi performed a katan demonstration for the dignitaries.

Sensei Shihan Dai Catherine Venter said she was satisfied with the outcomes of the championship.

“I’m very proud that all members were placed, including the four kobudo students. We had three weeks to prepare for the nationals. Senseis and students put in the extra time, training hard for the nationals and all were rewarded for their efforts.

“The championship was well organised and everything ran smoothly. Every sensei from all the dojos and provinces assisted, working well as a team. Different styles and dojos arrived from Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, North West and Gauteng. The pavilion was packed with parents giving support to all participants.
“Sasolburg’s mayor also attended where we had a march in. The mayor then gave a speech, thanking us for holding the championship at the Harry Gwala Hall in Sasolburg.”

The students are now waiting to hear if they have been selected to receive their SAMRAF national colours. The announcement will be made at a later stage.
