Footballer needs help to participate in Gothia Cup

He needs R13 000 to cover his flight costs

Wordsworth High School learner Ntokozo Mahlangu is appealing for financial assistance to go to Sweden to represent South Africa in the Gothia Cup from July 17 to 23.

The 17-year-old from Chief Albert Luthuli in Cloverdene has been selected by the South African School of Soccer (SASS), to participate in the U17 Youth World Cup to be staged in the city of Gothenburg in the Scandinavian country.

In a letter from SASS, the organisation stated that one of their challenges is to cover the players’ travel costs which amount to R13 000 per player for a return ticket.

“Kindly help Ntokozo make his dream come true. Any amount could possibly change his life. We leave on July 11 and return on the 26th,” the organisation appealed.

Mahlangu has been playing football since 2016. In 2017 he joined New Generation FC from Crystal Park where he played for three years until he was scouted by SASS while playing in an Easter tournament at Benoni Northerns.

“My family has really been supportive but at the moment we can’t afford travelling costs as Covid-19 affected us badly. I know many people are feeling the effects of the pandemic but I’m appealing to anyone to please help me. I need help with flight tickets and soccer boots. This opportunity can change my life.

“I am passionate. This is my chance to represent my country, township and school. If I make it, this will open doors for other passionate young footballers in the country,” he said.

The Grade 10 learner told the paper he wants to play at the highest level like his idol, Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch.

Ntokozo Mahlangu has been selected by the South African School of Soccer to participate in the U17 Youth World Cup to be staged in the city of Gothenburg.

Mahlangu is among a group of young South African players who hope to create their own magic by impressing scouts from Europe’s big teams in the tournament and possibly secure a contract.

The Gothia Cup serves as an opportunity to expose young talented and aspiring footballers to the powerhouses of European football.

The tournament, organised by BK Häcken FC, has been played annually since 1975 – except in 2020 due to the Covid19 pandemic. It has been credited for unearthing many global trailblazers including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Zè Roberto and Xabi Alonso.
