Padel tennis is coming to town

Two courts have been built and will accommodate both doubles and singles games.

From June, Benonians will get the opportunity to join in the fun of padel tennis when it launches at Old Benonians Sport Club.

According to Morgana Robbertze, the courts are nearing completion and should be ready by May 28.

She has encouraged Benonians interested in the game to come and join.

“It’s the fastest growing sport in the country and in the world. Anybody that takes up the sport will love it. It doesn’t matter your skills level.”

Robbertze stated that the game is a mixture of tennis and squash and is played on a 20x6m court for singles and 20x10m for doubles.

“The court is enclosed on all sides by walls and this enables players to play shots off the glass as long as the ball bounces once.”

Who can play?

According to Robbertze padel tennis is an inclusive and family-orientated game.

“Everyone can play. Kids, adults and even grandparents. Even people who aren’t good at tennis or squash can play. It’s easy to learn and not as physically taxing like a tennis or squash game. It’s also an ideal game for exercising.”

How is it played?

She added that the advantage of the sport is that it is suitable for all ages and levels and that it’s not dependent on strength and serving competency.

“It’s more about strategy and cooperation between you and your partner, rather than power.

“It’s usually played in doubles. Just like tennis, padel is played on a pitch that is divided by a net. The difference being that in padel, the player also uses the walls like in squash.”
