Phalula twins rally behind Karabo Mabilo for CGA president

The elections will be held on March 26 at Germiston Stadium.

Road running champions Lebo and Lebogang Phalula have declared their support for Karabo Mabilo to become the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) president in the upcoming elections to be held on March 26 at Germiston Stadium.

The twins have also accepted the nomination to serve at CGA for women’s empowerment. Lebo is nominated to be the chairperson in the Athlete Commission portfolio while Lebohang has been nominated in the Track & Field Commission.

The sisters said if elected their plans include keeping girls participating in the sport beyond the age of 16 and offering a holistic support structure to the girls.

They will seek to introduce resources that will assist in bridging the gap in the current structures and also ensure that there is growth in the development of female coaches.

They feel that the experience they have gained growing up in athletics structures will help them in taking care of the needs of athletes and ensure that they are prioritised by administrators.

“We know what runners need. We both grew up in the sport and have gained valuable knowledge about athletics. The development of athletics is very necessary, especially that of women athletes.

“We are at the pinnacle of our careers and want to see young females continue to dominate the sport,” the twins said in a statement.

Schools sport is close to their hearts as it is where they were discovered as junior athletes. They now want to extend the same gesture and assist to continue developing talent in the country.

“We feel that our brand can help CGA attract more sponsors, which may help to bring back coaching clinics and talent identification initiatives in township schools. That is how we were also discovered.”

Mabilo said their goal is to take the CGA to the next level.

“There is nothing more powerful than women collaborating. It feels like we are joining hands as leaders and celebrating not only our differences but similarities and goals to take athletics forward.

“These are indeed exciting times. We will be able to make a significant change and contribute to the success of CGA,” said Mabilo.
