Paddler wins national championship

He scored five goals in the tournament.

East Rand Kayaking member Warren Edwards helped the Gauteng Canoe polo team clinch the u-16 national championship at the canoe polo championships in Cape Town last weekend.

The 12-year-old scored five goals in the tournament to guide his team to the win.

“He did exceptionally well. He was the youngest player in the team. He got injured in one game, but he still managed to score five goals in the competition.

“He has become a valuable team player. He shows good team spirit and is able to work with his teammates in all situations,” said Gauteng and national canoe polo chairperson Christopher de Bree.

Edwards’ mother, Jillian, said he was introduced to canoe polo in 2019 when he was a cub at First Benoni Sea Scouts.

“He is passionate about canoe polo and dreams of going overseas to represent South Africa,” she said.
