Kwikscaff marathon back on calendar

The race will take place on Sunday July 3 and it offers 10km, 21.2km and 42.2km events.

Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) is excited to confirm that the Kwikscaff marathon event will go ahead after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The race will take place on July 3 and it offers 10km, 21.2km and 42.2km distances.

For over three decades, it has been the marathon of choice for thousands of runners who keep returning because of the fast and flat route, friendly marshals, well-stocked water tables and its perfect timing on the race calendar as one of the last Comrades qualifiers in Gauteng.

With electronic timing, results are available on the same day and will be sent automatically to Comrades Marathon for qualification purposes. Vitality members will also be able to earn points for participating in the Benoni Northerns Marathon, sponsored by Kwikscaff.

The race will start and finish at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club grounds on the corner of O’Reilly Merry and Brodigan Street, Northmead, Benoni. The 42.2km is a double lapper of the 21.1km route that takes runners through the beautiful Ebotse Links Golf Course.

“We are excited to announce our 2022 marathon event after two years of not being able to host it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, our marathon has been hosted at the end of April each year, as one of the last qualifying events for the Comrades Marathon in Gauteng.

“With the date for the 2022 Comrades Marathon shifting out from June to 28 August this year, most marathon clubs have moved out their races by a few months. This includes us.

“We have received approval from Central Gauteng Athletics to host our marathon event on Sunday, July 3 to place it more favourably on the race calendar and to retain its place as the last Comrades qualifier in Gauteng,” said BNAC club administrator Kerry Webb.

“We are very grateful to our sponsor, Kwikscaff, for standing by us through the difficulties of the past two years, and for helping to make this year’s event possible.

“The road running calendar looks livelier than it has in a very long time and we are looking forward to a fantastic season. We can’t wait to welcome back runners from near and far to Benoni Northerns once again,” Webb added.

Entries will be limited, aligned with Covid-19 safety protocols and to preserve the uncongested and stress-free atmosphere that the marathon regulars have come to appreciate. Masks should be worn at the start and finish. Covid-19 rules and regulations apply.

Online entries are open and will close on Sunday, June 26 or when the entry cap is reached. Runners can go to https://bnac.co.za/bnacmarathon for more information and to enter.
