BNAC’s Rowlin National Night Race is cancelled

It was only on October 11 that the government permitted the return of participants and spectators of up to a maximum of 750 indoors and up to a maximum of 2 000 outdoors.

Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) and sponsor Rowlin National Brokers have recently settled on the tough decision to cancel the Rowlin Night Race, which was supposed to take place on October 27.

“Uncertainty around the restrictions on gatherings and hosting road races until very recently has prevented the club from preparing for the event,” said Kerry Webb, BNAC secretary.

“Typically, preparations for the race begin about three months prior.”

It was only on October 11 that the government permitted the return of participants and spectators of up to a maximum of 750 indoors and up to a maximum of 2 000 outdoors.

“BNAC and Rowlin National Brokers are disappointed to have to cancel the event, which has become a favoured community tradition over the years,” said Webb.

“The race is known for its lively marshals and vibrant water tables, as well as the residents along the route who light up their homes and driveways, and play music for the runners.”

This race is just one of countless road running events that have been cancelled this year due to restrictions on sports events and gatherings amidst the pandemic.

“Earlier this year, BNAC had to cancel the Profix Scaffolding Marathon, which was scheduled to take place in April. BNAC has applied for new race dates for 2022 and will announce these events on receipt of the relevant approvals from the Roads Commission and Central Gauteng Athletics.

“The club is excited about the return of road running races, and looks forward to hosting its popular events again in 2022,” concluded Webb.
