Sashoc and Saha to host hockey webinar

The South African Schools Hockey Association (Sashoc), in association with the South African Hockey Association (Saha), will host a webinar on how to inspire young people to take up the sport, help them achieve their potential and celebrate their successes at every level of the game.

The webinar will be held in the build-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where both South Africa’s men and women hockey teams will be flying the country’s flag.

The International Hockey Federation designated 2021 as the Year of the Youth.

As an affiliate, Saha, in conjunction with SASHOC, are taking up the challenge to throw the net wider so that more youngsters can benefit from the sport.

As the custodian of hockey at the school level, Sashoc is responsible for growing and developing the sport from grassroots through youth and junior levels.

The webinar will, among other aspects, delve into how hockey, and sports in general, can help young people achieve their potential both in sports and as human beings.

“From our experience over the years, we have seen how sport can positively impact the lives of young people from different communities across South Africa,” said Sashoc’s chairperson.

“We would not only like to raise the profile of the sport in the country but through initiatives like the webinar shed light on the life-changing benefits hockey can have in the lives of young people.”

The topics that will be discussed during the webinar include:

• Talent identification, development and excellence

• How sport fosters friendships and contributes to social cohesion

• How sport can be used to celebrate diversity

• Youth leadership

• Building a more equal, fair and just society using sport

The webinar will further tap into the excitement of the Olympic Games that will kick off in less than a month.

On June 23, Olympic Day was celebrated, which also marked 30 days before the start of the global showpiece.

The hockey competition will start the very next morning after the opening ceremony where hosts Japan will open the tournament against current world number one Australia in the men’s tournament.

Hockey has been part of the Olympic Games programme since Antwerp 1928, some 93 years ago.

Olympic Day, which marks the formation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on this day in 1894, aims to celebrate the joy of sport and commemorate the creation of the modern Olympic Movement by founder Pierre de Coubertin.
