Old Bens player tests positive for Covid-19

Prior to the game commencing, there was a moment of silence for the Old Bens and Northerns members who died last year.

After a year with Covid, the local derby between Benoni Northerns and Old Bens took place on May 1.

The Old Bens reserves winning 1-0 against Northerns reserves. Results for the first teams ended with Northerns beating Bens 3-1.

But this wasn’t the only news players, fans and clubs came away with.

“Subsequent to the derby that recently took place, one of our first team players tested positive for Covid-19,” said Clive Liversage, Old Bens chairperson.

“He had no symptoms before the game and all necessary protocols were followed as advised by our football association.”

According to Liversage, all of those who came into contact with the player have been notified.

“All of the first and second team players have self-isolated and have not taken part in training or games for the past two weeks,” he said.

“This is an everyday reality we have all come to face. The Old Benonians Football Club wishes our player a speedy recovery.

“We have notified our football association and will continue to drive the strict Covid protocols at our club – there should be no further concerns about this occurrence.”

Prior to the game commencing, there was a minute’s silence for Old Bens and Northerns members who had been lost over this last year.

Benoni Northerns chairperson Emma da Silva has said all their protocols as per Easterns Football Association were followed.

“All our players were advised, practice was cancelled and pending, no team members showed any symptoms,” said da Silva.

“We were given the all clear to continue with our matches.”
