Football team in Daveyton need assistance

Most of these boys come from poor backgrounds and can’t afford items such as kit and soccer balls.

Black Poison FC in Daveyton was started in February by Lucky Mabunda, a boy residing in Daveyton, with the aim of keeping other young boys off the street, out of gangs and away from illegal substances.

They are now looking to the community of Benoni to assist with donations or sponsorships so they may purchase proper kits, equipment and the correct shoes, as currently they are borrowing these items from other local teams.

“Lucky is a young boy who used to play for another team before deciding to start his own to assist other young boys within Daveyton to achieve their dreams,” said Luleka Zamantlane Tala, assistant coach and mother to an u-13 player.

She said most of the boys come from poor backgrounds and can’t afford items such as kit and soccer balls.

“We have 30 players, 15 in u-13 and 15 in u-15,” she said.

“They are a bunch of young, dedicated and talented boys who are passionately in love with soccer.

“Coming from poor backgrounds, some don’t have soccer boots and they play either barefoot or wear their school shoes.”

Although they take part in very small tournaments within Daveyton, the teams aren’t part of any leagues yet; this being a dream they all hope to achieve.

“Each player contributes R5 whenever we have a tournament,” she said.

“They would love to be involved in a league one day, against Northerns or Bens.”

“They practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” she said.

“Although he doesn’t have the necessary qualifications, Lucky is coaching with my help and assisting us along with Gontse Phale, who also plays for the team.

“Lucky’s main aim is to win against drug abuse, alcohol and gangs by arranging the right platform to keep young boys busy with soccer practices and local tournaments, instead of roaming the streets and getting mixed up in bad things.

“We will appreciate the City Times and the community of Benoni’s help because we can’t do this on our own.

“Please help us, Benoni. Help us to create better lives for the children who aren’t as fortunate.”
