Grid pro finals done and dusted

Van Zyl had lost one match in winner’s pool and knew he had to win to get back into the finals.

A wet start on December 5 didn’t stop the SA Long Drive finals from taking place at the Grasslands Driving Range.

“It was such a great event,” said Steven van Zyl, Grid Pro owner.

“All five divisions had to qualify for the finals on December 6.”

Winning the ladies division was Kiera Floyd, taking longest drive of the day.

David Melman won the senior pro division.

Amateur division was won by Devon Milder, and third place went to Corné Duvenage.

The seniors division was won by Brendon Quale from Natal; he also claimed the longest drive in that division.

It then came down to the main event, the men’s open pro division.

“This division had the top 16 long drivers in the country fight it out for the 2020 SA Long Drive title,” explained van Zyl.

“The event and competition was fierce and after 29 matches in the double elimination rounds the top four found themselves fighting against tough conditions.”

Juan Nel went up against Thorne van Zyl, who had lost one match in winner’s pool and knew he had to win to get back into the finals.

Nico Potgieter hit against Nel and lost, taking fourth overall for the event.

Thorne took the win against Nel and found himself back in the final against the ever-consistent Marco das Neves.

“It was an incredible final,” said van Zyl.

Thorne had to win twice in order to win the overall day.

Das Neves, to get to the final, only had to win the first match to win the title.

“Thorne had a fight on his hands as das Neves was not just going to lie down,” explained van Zyl.

Thorne took the first match win by two metres and knew he had to win the second match in order to claim the title.
“What a match it was,” said van Zyl.

Thorne took the second match by one metre and claimed his second SA Long Drive title and also won the Order of Merit title for the fourth year running.

“Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to all our sponsors, fans, athletes and supporters of 2020,” concluded van Zyl.
