Easterns Cricket ladies win awards

The Eastern’s women's cricket team had a stellar 2019/20 season.

Playing in the second division, each and every lady pulled together as a team and they won all but one of their games for the season and finished as winners of their pool.

The players were unfortunate as they were due to play the Border women’s team in a playoff to determine which team would be promoted to the first division.

But, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world and due to South Africa’s Covid-19 regulations cricket was called to a halt and because Border had accumulated more points during the season, Cricket South Africa determined that they would be promoted without playing the playoff game.

Despite this, the ladies thoroughly enjoyed the season and were proud of what they were able to achieve.
Coach Adele van Eck said she was very proud of her team and how hard they fought through the year and especially how they handled the disappointment of not being able to play in the play-offs.

“We are looking forward to the new season and cannot wait to go one step further and succeed with their promotion to the top division,” said Adele.

Unfortunately, the assistant coach Sibusiso Mfaba was not available on the day for comment or the team photo.
Although, as everyone knows, a game of cricket can only be won if the whole team contributes and there were some stand out players.

They are, Batswoman of the Year Carmen Nagel, Bowler of the Season Madison Landsman (who was only 15 years old when the season got underway) and Player of the Season Bernadette Greeff.

Although the beginning of the 2020/21 season has been delayed by the Covid-19 regulations and practise was also been severely effected, the women started practising earnestly over the past few weeks and are chomping at the bit to get back in the middle.

Coach Adele Van Eck is hopeful to start setting up some practise games with various other provinces and get the ladies the competitive practise they will need before the season restarts in January.

“Women’s cricket is growing across the world but does not receive the publicity in South Africa that it should, especially in the provincial and club divisions,” said Adele.

Eastern’s Women want to appeal to everyone in the country to take note of women’s cricket and to spread the word about it and get involved.

Sadly, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, funds for the women’s team are at an absolute minimum.

A sincere request is made on behalf of the Eastern’s Women’s cricket team for assistance of any kind in the form of sponsorships and/or funding.

“Sponsors and assistance will be wholeheartedly appreciated,” said Adele.

“Here’s to the Eastern’s Women’s cricket team for the 2020/21 season, may the cricket gods be with them.”
