Northerns staff challenge a success

The winners in terms of most money raised are the Joking Joggers coming in with R16 726, the Cricket Legends coming in second place with R12 105 and the Gorgeous Girls Athletics with R10 000.

Benoni Northerns held a challenge throughout lockdown to raise money for their club staff members who have suffered financially due to the Covid-19 crisis.

“Several teams challenged each other to raise R8 000 between June and the end of September and also challenged other teams to join in,” explained Craig Wittstock, president of Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

Various methods of raising funds were used such as donations, kit sales, raffles, fund-raising runs and online poker evenings.

“The total raised thus far is R79 098. This will be added to an initial fund-raiser of R26 000, bringing the grand total to R125 000,” said Wittstock.

The winners in terms of most money raised are the Joking Joggers, coming in with R16 726, the Cricket Legends came in second place with R12 105 while third place went to Gorgeous Girls Athletics with R10 000.

The funds raised have been distributed among the staff by way of fortnightly grocery vouchers.

“We hope to continue this support into January/February next year. It has been heart-warming to see the overwhelming support for our staff who are such a big part of the Benoni Northerns family,” concluded Wittstock.

Rod Scheepers, general manager at Benoni Northerns, said: “Participating in the staff challenge was most gratifying as it highlighted the special bond that exists between our members and staff.

“Members recognised that the staff had been significantly affected by the effects of the virus and willingly did what they could to improve their plight.

“The staff is humbled and most appreciative of this gesture. They have expressed their gracious thanks for the generous contributions.”
