Self-defence advice while under lockdown

This hasn't stopped any of them from making do with the cards that everyone have been dealt.

During the lockdown, sporty people in Benoni are starting to feel the frustration.

Candice Hitchcox, who assists Terence Teraine with his studio, ACI Arts and Stunts, as well as seminars he presents in Benoni, offers some home fitness and self-defence tips and highlights precautions to take while housebound.

“I have been skipping and doing sit-ups and pilates during lockdown to keep my fitness levels up,” said Hitchcox.

“The most important self-defence technique would be to wear a mask and gloves when going out, even to get groceries.

“But if anyone is threatened physically while being safely at home, such as a burglary, I would suggest people watch boxing videos on YouTube and practise their self-defence using a pillow supported by books for a hard base.

“Especially women who live alone.

“Aiming for the throat or nose of the intruder is a quick disabling method and gives you the best chance at getting away from your assailant.

“A good backfist on the throat will temporarily block their windpipe and on the nose it will temporarily blind your assailant, giving you time to get away.

“If you hit the nose hard enough to break it, it will allow you more time to get away before the assailant can see clearly again.

“In these times its good to stay safe from a virus, but also from the people out there who refuse to listen to reason. They will be desperate to grab more than an object.

“I believe its better to be ready and prepared, then sorry later.

“Stay safe Benoni.”
