Being Mega at the Masters

Masters Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (Mega) is a team of master swimmers that, in conjunction with the team at Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, hosted and competed at the 36th SA Masters Nationals held at Delville Swimming Pool from March 11-15.

The team had a successful week of racing, and brought home several medals:

Colin Gordon-Davis – men 65-69 – bronze in 50m backstroke and silver in the 1km open water.

Brigitte Thysse – woman 30-34 – silver in 200 individual medley, gold in 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley and silver in the 1km open water.

Christine van Rooyen – woman 40-44 – bronze in 200m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke.

Keith Gordon-Davis – men 60-64 – silver in 100m backstroke, silver in 200m backstroke, gold in 50m backstroke and silver in the 1km open water.

Roxy Heynes – women 35-39 – bronze in 100m breaststroke.

Jane Meaker – woman 70-74 – silver in 800m freestyle, gold in the 100m Freestyle, 50m freestyle, 400m freestyle and gold in the 1km open water.

Sarel Naude – men 80-84 – silver in 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle.

Brian Whistler – men 50-54 – gold in the 1km open water.

Mega supported Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) by donating R7 500 for the pink and purple Cansa swimming caps that the competitors wore at the open water.

“There is a huge passion for swimming that runs through our team,” said Brigitte Thysse, public relations and marketing representative for Mega.

“We motivate each other, and turn swimming from an individual sport into a fun and exciting team sport.

“You are never too old to set a new goal or dream. The whole process is about just loving what you are doing, and getting a kick out of racing and having fun.”
