Northerns juniors hit the ground running

In the first year of junior rugby at the popular sports club, no less than six Northerns sides were involved in their respective season-ending Valke junior finals, staged at Olympia Park in Springs.

The fledgling Benoni Northerns junior rugby section can deservedly pat themselves on the back following a successful inaugural season.

The future of the club looks extremely promising if overall results are a gauge.

The u-8’s, which initially played in an older age category, captured the inaugural Super 8’s league title with a hard-fought 7-0 victory over Boksburg in the gold medal match after downing Bobbies 17-5 in the semi-finals.

The u-11 A (red) team also featured in the winner’s column, defeating Springs 27-7 in the semi-final in their own backyard before clinching a last-gasp 14-10 win over Boksburg in the championship decider.

Earlier, the u-11 B (white) side were soundly beaten 32-0 by eventual finalists Boksburg in the semi’s before going down to host club Springs in the third fourth-place playoff match.

The u-9 A outfit were runners-up in their age group, ending on the wrong end of a 12-0 score line against Vereeniging in the final after edging Springs 7-0 in a tight semi-final encounter.

Their u-9 B counterparts took bronze with a convincing 40-10 triumph over near neighbours Boksburg, redeeming themselves after a 20-12 loss to Kempton Park in the semi-finals, while the u-10’s ended fourth in their age group.
