Smith dazzles at SA National Motocross Champs

Nursing a combination of foot and thumb injuries, the tenacious Benonian had to dig deep and summon all his mental and physical strength at the Terratopia Circuit aboard his CIT Racing Division 250cc Husqvarna.

Slade Smith fought through the pain to top the podium in the MX2 class in the final round of the South African National Motocross Championship in Fourways last weekend.

Nursing a combination of foot and thumb injuries, the tenacious Benonian had to dig deep and summon all his mental and physical strength at the Terratopia Circuit aboard his CIT Racing Division 250cc Husqvarna.

His task wasn’t made easier by extremely hot, dusty conditions, but he delighted the spectators with a top-drawer performance against the top riders in the country.

That was just the boost the promising 18-year-old Rynfield rider needed ahead of his upcoming trip to the United States to compete in the biggest amateur motocross event, the Mini O’s Thor Winter Olympics in Gainesville, Florida.

Racing in the Schoolboy 1 and 125cc classes, he managed his best all-around performance at the Mini O’s last year, with a third and fourth place overall in his respective classes.

He did, however, start racing domestically in the 250cc class, effectively making it his rookie year on the bigger bike in Florida.

Not only is Smith US-bound for a seventh consecutive year, but there are even more exciting times ahead as he is set to join the Summit Racing Yamaha team in 2020.
