Soccer school branches out to Benoni

Coach Ryan Macfarlane and his business associates have opened the new SuperSport United (SSU) Soccer School at the Benoni Country Club (BCC), in Morehill, where older tennis courts have been converted into two artificial surface, five-a-side playing fields.

Young, talented soccer players no longer have to venture out of Benoni to gain valuable specialised skills-based training.

The five-a-side soccer concept is based on the highly popular Futebol de Salao, which originated in Brazil and later became known as Futsal when it was formalised by the game’s world controlling body, FIFA.

The focus is predominantly on ages 4-15, over and above the highly specialised coaching, weekly matches are also staged between the various regional SSU Soccer Schools in all age groups. Training is ongoing throughout the year.

There are some 30 SSU soccer schools around the country, the closest one until now has been at the Italian Club in Boksburg, which is also managed by Macfarlane and his associates.

Macfarlane holds a level two Futsal coaching license and will be furthering his training in England over December.

“This time last year we toyed with the idea of starting an SSU Soccer School in Benoni,” Macfarlane told the City Times.

“A large percentage of the boys who live in Benoni had to drive through to Boksburg and some even to Edenvale or Kempton Park to train at other facilities.”

“We know Benoni has a very rich football culture and thought it would be nice for kids to come to us for more individual skills-based training, different from what they get at their respective clubs.”

“Our programme is designed to complement their club training and help them to better compete in their club and school teams as well as potentially advancing into our academy set-up.”

The facility doesn’t only cater to younger players and is a hive of activity throughout the week.

Over and above the specialised SSU School coaching, the school hosts evening leagues five days a week, which also includes senior women. The coaching staff are also intricately involved in local schools and communities.

“We have not only seen a gap in Benoni but also made a huge investment in the BCC. Not only is it attracting kids, but adding huge value to the array of sporting facilities at the club,” added Macfarlane.
