Benoni Stars lose to Vosloorus Arsenal in the Safa Ekurhuleni Cup final

The Vosloorus side will now represent the Safa Ekurhuleni district in this season’s inter-regional Nedbank Cup play-offs.

The Benoni Stars SAB League Football Club came within a single match of advancing to the regional play-offs of the prestigious Nedbank Cup.

They lost 2-1 to Vosloorus Arsenal in the Safa Ekurhuleni Cup final at their Currin Park (Old Benonians) home base last week.

After a cagey period of football, in which both teams created a handful of chances, Vusi Mnqumevu put the visitors on the front foot at the stroke of half-time with the opening goal.

Stars came out in the second period intent on playing more direct football, in search of an equaliser, but couldn’t breach the tight Vosloorus defence.

The Benoni side’s task was made even more difficult midway through the second half when Vosloorus doubled their lead. Stars lost an opportunity to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot minutes later.

Stars did manage to find that elusive goal eight minutes from time via Shaydon Short and that changed the complexion of the match. Despite a sustained onslaught from the hosts, their opponents managed to cling to their lead.

“It was a very good game with both teams having chances to win the game. Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way, but I’m really happy with the team’s performances and our processes going forward. We will continue to work hard and improve,” said Stars coach Bernie Couthinho.

In the next two Castle League fixtures, Stars are away to Highlands Park on October 4 and will host Germiston City at Old Ben’s on October 11.
