Showcasing women’s martial arts

Mariam Latif, Afzal Hussain and Ali Latif also topped the podium in their respective divisions.

Athletes from the United Martial Arts Dojo in Benoni excelled at the recent Full Contact Martial Arts Association (FCMA) and United Knockdown Organisation (UKOSA) Women’s Cup in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

The tournament, which wrapped up Women’s Month, was open to all female competitors from all the different martial arts sporting codes.

The best junior female champion was Laila Latif, and Shanté Castelyn took top honours in the senior category.

Both are athletes from the UMAI Benoni dojo under the instruction of shihan Aslam Mahomed.

Salaamah Mahomed and Nazirah Hassan, both eight years old, were the youngest female competitors from Benoni and also won their respective divisions.

Salaamah has been named in two categories – School Sports Athlete of the Year and Sports Achiever of the Year – in the upcoming Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards.
