Benoni, an action zone for junior sport

Junior grassroots sport is where it all starts, and the health of any sport is measured to a large degree by the health of the supply line which feeds it.

Benoni has been an action zone for junior sport in the past three weeks, with junior hockey, golf and rugby falling under the spotlight.

The Benoni Northerns hockey committee hosted their annual regional junior hockey festival on August 3, which attracted a great turnout of players, coaches, parents and supporters from across Gauteng.

Organisers of the popular Grid Outlaws Long Driving golf competition showcased some of the budding junior golfers during the lunch recess ahead of the semi-final playoffs.

Hundreds of aspiring “Springboks” also took part in the regional junior rugby festival, hosted by Benoni Northerns.

Players from u-6 through to u-18 level from clubs in the 12 towns within the Valke Rugby region took part and were enthusiastically cheered on by a large contingent of parents and supporters across all the fields.

The u-6s and u-7s played the introductory, non-contact tag rugby game on specially modified mini fields, where a single point is awarded for each try scored, while the older age groups played matches in the normal 15-man code.
