Medals in May for Benoni Country Club’s May Homer

Medals from Israel for the local visually impaired bowler.

Benoni Country Club’s visually impaired bowling star May Homer enjoyed a successful trip to the Visually Impaired Bowls International Challenge in Ramat Gan, Israel in mid May.

The Northmead resident and her husband and bowling director Paul brought back a gold medal in the singles B3 (partially sighted) category and a silver medal in the mixed pairs.

“The tournament was great, but extremely hot,” said Homer.

“We were dying in the afternoons when we had to play.

“Paul had to pour water over my head a few times to cool me down.”

It was the second time the Benonian has been to Israel, having represented South Africa back in 2010 which was also her debut international tournament.

In 2010 her results were the other way around when she bagged a gold medal in the pairs and a silver medal in the singles.

“I was expecting the greens to be fast, but they were not very different to ours at the moment,” she said.

The medals were a welcome reward for Homer who said she was struggling with her bowling form before a knee replacement just over a year ago.

“I was really struggling before the replacement, but after it everything was totally different.

“In the last six months my bowling has started to come right again.”

She praised her partner and director Paul for assisting and directing her as always.

“We played so well together,” she added.

Homer is now looking forward to the Disability Bowls National Championship which will be played in Boksburg and Germiston in June.
