Robor Scaffolding Marathon 2019 to be clean and green

It’s going to be the cleanest race yet, with the help of all the stakeholders.

In an effort to keep Benoni and the 2019 Robor Marathon clean on April 28, the organisers, Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC), are implementing a waste and recycling solution for the event.

“We appeal to your green conscience and efforts to make it a success,” said Samantha Choles, waste and recycling coordinator for the Robor Marathon and communications manager at RecyclePaperZA.

Choles is also the founder of the Benoni-based Litter Bugs Park and Pavement Clean-Up Group.

“We encourage all runners and spectators to make use of the bins and bags en route.”

Choles said that the majority of the waste is single-use in the form of paper cool-drink cups and plastic sachets along with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and race envelopes.

“These are all recyclable.

“We urge people to keep recyclables separate from non-recyclable and food waste as far as is practically possible.”

The BNAC team has put the following measures in place:

• Mpact Recycling has confirmed the sponsorship of over 160 Mpact Recycling branded box-bins for the water points and the main field and parking areas.

• Each water point will be given 10 to 20 box-bins, depending on where they are on the route.

• Boxes will also be placed on the field and at the entry sales area.

• Plastics SA, the custodian of the annual Clean-Up SA campaign, has provided 2 000 yellow bags which will be used to line the box-bins at the water points and will provide supplementary collection along the route.

• Each water point will receive 30 to 60 yellow bin bags to line the boxes.

• Each marshal will receive bags for use near their points.

• K1 Recycling will place a large cage at the main club for water captains and marshals to drop off their recyclable waste (bags of paper cups and sachets, used box-bins).

• K1 Recycling will come to the club on April 29 to remove the recyclables for sorting and processing. K1 Recycling, a recycling business owned by Tshepo Mazibuko, has 11 permanent employees and 800 collectors based in Katlehong and Thokoza on its books.

It also draws waste from two landfill sites, providing much-needed income for gatherers, who are mainly women and children.

Choles also invited people in the area to bring along home paper recycling to the race and place it in the special trailer.

This includes milk and juice cartons, cardboard boxes of all kinds and office paper.
