Community embraces new Homestead Lake parkrun at inaugural event

The new parkrun has a home at Homestead.

The parkrun concept is growing in leaps and bounds around the country and in Benoni and Ekurhuleni it is no different.

The addition and announcement of another parkrun in Benoni, the Homestead Lake parkrun, created tremendous excitement among community members looking to get fit and active.

The inaugural 5km Homestead Lake parkrun was run in the Farrarmere park on the morning of February 23 and was attended by 733 participants.

Geoff Kingsburgh, Homestead Lake parkrun’s run director, expressed his delight at the success of the inaugural event.

“I am very pleased with the turnout,” said the run director.

“From what we have seen today I think we can look forward to more successful Homestead Lake parkruns.

“We have been working on it for the past six or so months so it’s great to see it happening.

“Thank you to Bruce Fordyce, parkrun South Africa and Chris Sutton (Gauteng Regional Ambassador for parkrun) for the work behind the scenes and to all the volunteers who have made it happen.

“We walked this park on numerous occasions to get the 5km route sorted and it’s one of the best settings for a parkrun that we have come across.”

The first man home at the parkrun was Matthew Aiken who finished the inaugural run in a time of 19 minutes and 36 seconds while Kaye-Leigh Dezulovic was the first woman home in a time of 20 minutes and 18 seconds.
