Team C16 launches in Benoni, promoting ‘fun on the run’

Hit the road with Team C16, now in Benoni.

Four years ago, in Sunward Park, Benzi Tenza, Maria Gumede and Hulikani Nyathi ran 6.5km together in preparation for the 2016 Comrades Marathon.

What started as a modest training run soon developed into a running revolution as many runners from the area and afar gradually decided to team up and work on a project of running and completing Comrades 2016 hence the birth of the training team called ‘Team C16’.

According to Team C16 spokesperson Manape Malebana it is a unique concept because runners from various running clubs train together and follow a training programme in line with their individual goals for the Comrades Marathon without necessarily terminating their club membership.

Now, the team consists of over 100 active members in Gauteng and other provinces and continues to get recognition on various social media platforms.

On February 9 Team C16 members painted Benoni blue as they ran 10km to launch their Benoni branch from Virgin Active Benoni.

Their other branches include Sunward Park, Germiston, K90 and Kempton Park.

The team even has a national presence in other provinces such as KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Western Cape to mention a few while Team C16 footprints can further be traced outside the borders of the country in places such as Kenya and Brazil.

Speaking at the launch Team C16 founder and coach Benzi Tenza said: “I appeal to all members to stay united and maintain the good values of the team, not only when you are running but always”.

The launch concluded with a meet-and-greet moment and the cutting of cake.

The Team C16 training programme can be found online by searching ‘Team C16’ on Facebook.

Benoni runners meet at Virgin Active in the mornings from 4.30am.
