Actonville Spurs secure a top six spot

Two wins in succession for ASCC.

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier League XI just snuck into the top six of the Eastern Premier League competition with a 105-run victory over KwaThema on January 27 at the Prince Thethe Oval in KwaThema.

It is the team’s second crushing victory in succession after they rolled Tembisa over the weekend before.

Batting first, ASCC put together a score of 175 runs in 42.4 overs before they were bowled all out.

Veteran Ridwaan Daya was the top-scorer in that innings, scoring 49 runs.

With the ball, Actonville proved too strong for their hosts and wrapped their batsmen up for a paltry 70 runs in 23 overs.

Shakeel Ahmed was the star man with bowling figures of 4/33 in eight overs while skipper Mekyle Pillay (3/16 in six overs) and Zain Webster (2/12 in six overs) also featured prominently.

Pillay said: “I am very pleased with the lads’ performance this past weekend.

“We had a goal for the first half of the season and that was to make the top six, and we managed to accomplish that.

“On a wicket that was very inconsistent, I thought our batsmen managed to put on a good enough total to defend.

“Our bowlers, as they’ve done throughout the first half, came to the party once again.

“They put us in a great position early in the game and we just carried the momentum through and earned a well-deserved bonus-point win.”

The team will have a bye this weekend.
