Northerns unbeaten in Premier League with win over rivals

A fantastic result for the Benonians keeps them unbeaten at the top of the Eastern Premier League table.

It’s now five wins in succession for skipper Kurt Francis and his Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) Premier XI.

The team enjoyed a superb home, bonus point win by 85 runs over rivals and defending champions Kempton Park Cricket Club at Northern Areas on November 11.

Francis lost the morning coin toss and was put into bat by his opposite number.

BNCC lost their opening batsmen Vaughn Humphrey and Rhenier Jordaan with 42 runs on the board before Rian van der Merwe (41 runs from 56 balls) and Aron Visser (30 runs from 35 balls) restored some order.

When both were dismissed the wickets began tumbling at regular intervals before young WP Myburgh and Stefan Jordaan met up at the wicket.

The duo put together a superb ninth-wicket stand that took the host team from 163/8 to a final score of 254/8 in their 50-overs batting innings.

Myburgh scored 48 not out while Jordaan finished on 44 not out.

With the ball, the BNCC bowlers were good from the first delivery.

Fast opening bowler Kundai Matigimu enjoyed a three-wicket haul (3/30 in eight overs) while Stefano di Bartolomeo, Stefan Jordaan and Leonard Killian each bragged a brace of wickets as Kempton were eventually bowled all out for 169 in 45 overs.

“I’m very pleased about the win,” said Francis.

“Hats off to WP and Stefan with that great stand at the end of our batting innings, which was vital for us and which ended up winning the game for us.

“Our energy in the field was a lot better too and our bowlers were superb again.

“I still don’t think we’ve played our best cricket yet, but we’re still coming away with wins and bonus points.”

The team will play Springs Old Boys at Northern Areas on November 18 with the first delivery set to be bowled at 10am.
