Actonville suffer opening day loss in Eastern Premier League

The host team took advantage of home ground advantage by smashing 302/5 in their batting innings.

Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville played host to the first 2018/2019 Eastern Premier League match of the season for Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC) when they hosted a strong Alberton Cricket Club on October 7.

The visitors batted first and amassed a big score of 326/3 in their 50 overs with Jarred Alder (119 runs not out) and Juandré Potgieter (128 runs) doing the majority of the damage against the Actonville bowling attack.

CJ van der Walt (2/67 in nine overs) was the best of the ASCC bowlers.

The home side, in their reply with the willow, did not embarrass themselves and put up a good fight.

Skipper Imraan Manack fell four runs shy of a deserved century with 96 runs while Saahil Khan (56 runs) and Mekyle Pillay (41 runs) grafted hard for Actonville.

Despite their good knocks they could only get to 283/8 in their 50-over batting innings, leaving them 43 runs shy of the target.

ASCC’s Premier Reserve XI also played Alberton on Sunday (away from home at the Lindeque Oval in Alberton).

Actonville were dismal in their reply, scoring a mere 85 runs in their reply, setting up a win by a large margin for Alberton.

In other weekend results for the club, the Saturday First League side enjoyed a 213-run win over Alberton at Lords on October 6 while their Saturday Fifth League side enjoyed a six-wicket win over Benoni Northerns on the same day.
