League victories for BNFC, Old Bens

Benoni clubs enjoyed victories this past Saturday.

Both Benoni Northerns (BNFC) and Old Bens football clubs were victorious in Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Senior Super League and Super Reserve League fixtures on July 28.

BNFC’s teams travelled to Bedfordview to play Olympia at the Italian Club.

The Super League side bounced back from defeat to Randburg the weekend before to pick up a 4-2 victory.

Keegan Frawley (a brace), Kwanda Sokutu and Mothoka ‘Stoaney’ Moeketsi got their names on the score sheet for BNFC.

Coach Jannie van den Berg said that he made a formational system change to accommodate the players available to him and it worked on the day.

“We have a good run of home matches coming up, so we will work hard towards a better league finish,” said van den Berg whose team are lying in seventh position on the table and are out of the cup competition.

The club’s Super Reserve League XI continued their march towards the league title with a 7-1 hammering in the preceding game.

They lead the league by eight points over second-best Luso Africa.

They could achieve a league double this season, but would first need to overcome Zwide in a Super Reserves Cup match at Northern Areas on August 9.

Before that though, both teams will play Germiston at Northern Areas on August 4 in their respective leagues.

Meanwhile, Old Bens Football Club recovered from three straight league defeats with a 3-0 win over Zwide at Currin Park on Saturday.

Striker Themba Vilakazi added to his impressive haul of goals this campaign with a hat trick, which included two converted penalty kicks.

Coach Raymond Cloete said that the team is in for a tough two weeks with a league fixture against Kempton Park (away) on August 4, a Super Cup quarter-final clash versus Zwide at Currin Park on August 9 and then the famous Benoni Derby against BNFC at Northern Areas on August 11.

The club’s Super Reserve League picked up their third successive league win on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Zwide.

They are lying in third position on their league table.
