Daveyton golfers make history with Scratch League victory

An incredible achievement for the gentlemen from Daveyton.

Golfers from Daveyton Golf Club brought pride back to their club when they achieved a historic feat at State Mines Country Club in Brakpan recently.

The club hasn’t participated in the Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s (EGU) Scratch League B-Division for over 12 years and won the league on their long-awaited return.

Loyiso Barnes, a development coach at the South African Golf Development Board, who runs a golf development programme at the Daveyton club, said that since the programme’s inception in 2015 they are starting to show signs of progress in golf development.

“Some of the young golfers who came through the programme showed great ability and I felt it was worthwhile to get a Scratch League team going,” he said.

“I assembled a team of four young players and four of our senior players and entered them into the B-Division.

“Unfortunately, we lost the first game against Reading, but then won all four games after that.

“That gave us 12 points to ensure that we topped the log and won the B-Division.

“It is an absolutely awesome feeling to win this league.

“To me, it is the tip of the iceberg to show that the development programme at the club is working.

“Without it, I don’t think we will be able to get to where we are today.”

The club has now been promoted to the A-Division and their first goal will be to stay in that league.

He appealed to people in the private sector to come on board with sponsorships of the team and of the development golf programme to sustain their presence in the Scratch League A-Division.
