Eventful football cup matches for Benoni teams

Cup football always throws out some interesting results.

The Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super Cup’s first round of matches kicked-off with local clubs Benoni Northerns (BNFC) and Old Bens in away action.

Northerns travelled to Bedfordview to play Olympia.

The BNFC first side played well but was knocked out of the competition after a 2-1 defeat.

Their reserve team, however, enjoyed the perfect start to their quest for a league and cup double with a 4-1 win in the earlier game on Saturday.

“Again the result didn’t go our way and it was not for a lack of trying on our part,” said BNFC first-team coach Jannie van den Berg.

“I’m starting to sound like an old record, but again we dominated the match, but didn’t put our chances away.

“It’s disappointing because we were hoping to have a good run in the cup and have been playing good football of late.”

Old Bens’ first and reserve teams were involved in some weekend craziness when they travelled to the Greek Sporting Club in Linksfield to play against Corinthians.

The reserve side match was called off before half-time after a fight broke out.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s first team was also involved in a crazy encounter.

At full time the score was 4-4, then 5-5 in extra time which sent the match into a penalty shoot-out.

Goalkeeper Chad Bamford made three incredible saves in the shoot-out to send Bens through to the next round (Bens winning 3-0 in the shoot-out).

Themba Vilakazi (a brace), Lesego ‘Wii’ Mhlangeni and Bongani ‘Tsiki’ Thelejane (a brace) got their names on the score sheet for Old Bens.

“It was a good game of football, but it really should have been more comfortable for us,” said Cloete.

“I think we missed something like nine one-on-ones which should definitely not be happening.

“I am happy to progress in the cup though.”

Both Benoni clubs will be in away day league action this coming Saturday.

Old Bens’ first and reserve XIs travel to Turffontein to play Sporting while Northerns will travel to the Randburg Sports Complex to face an always daunting opponent in the form of Randburg Football Club.
