Finally a win for Northerns firsts, Bens lose at Luso

It has been a long time coming for the Benoni Northerns first XI.

After a string of unfortunate results, coach Jannie van den Berg and his Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Senior Super League side have a win to their name.

The team defeated an always unpredictable Zwide outfit 4-0 at Northern Areas on June 30.

The league-leading BNFC Super Reserve League team continued their incredible run at the top of their log with a win by the same scoreline in the earlier kick-off on Saturday.

Speaking about the first team’s win, van den Berg said that things finally went his young team’s way.

“We were talking after the match and I said to the lads that we actually didn’t play any different to the last few weeks, but finally there was a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

“The youngsters were far more disciplined, stuck to their positions and took their chances.

“There were still some mistakes, but it wasn’t costly this time.”

The coach praised his young striker Kwanda Sokutu who bagged a hat-trick in the match.

Both BNFC teams will play Kempton Park at Northerns on July 7.

The reserves kick-off at 1.45pm followed by the first team clash at 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, rivals Old Bens were left disappointed after a 3-1 defeat to Super League leaders Luso Africa in Primrose on Saturday.

Their Super Reserve League XI also tasted defeat, going down 1-0 to Luso.

Coach Raymond Cloete said that defensive errors cost his team, despite his men playing good football on the day.

They will look to rectify those errors when they host a struggling Boksburg team at Currin Park on July 7.
