Canoeists compete at Gauteng champs

Paddling for a spot in the team.

Ekurhuleni Kayak Club (ERK), based at Homestead Dam, hosted the Gauteng Canoe Union Marathon Championships races over the weekend of June 2 and 3.

The K1s (single discipline) raced on the Saturday, including juniors from the schools league (u-8 through to 18 years old), as did the seniors and masters.

The misty frosty morning on Saturday improved to a wonderfully sunny, warm Highveld winter day on the Sunday for the K2 (doubles event).

The championships served as trials for the team selection for Gauteng to represent the province at the South African Marathon Championships which takes place from June 15 to 17 in St Francis Bay where the team for South Africa is selected to represent the country at the World Marathon Championships in Portugal later this year.

Locally based paddlers who participated and were selected to the team for Gauteng included Vincent Buttrick in the great grandmaster category and Radowslaw Olszewski in the sub-grandmaster category.
