Locals run down from Maritzburg to Durban at Comrades 2018

Local runners did Benoni proud.

The 2018 Comrades Marathon 90.184km down run from Pietermaritzburg’s City Hall to the new finish at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium took place on June 10 and was, for most local runners, a successful one.

For others, however, finishing the world’s oldest and longest ultra-marathon was not to be.

Benoni’s running clubs were, as always, well represented at the Comrades and returned fantastic results.

Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) was the local club with the most Comrades entries and therefore, with the most finishers, 179 out of 190 runners (a 94.2 per cent success rate).

Their notable results are:

The indomitable BNAC runner Sanyana Budha was the club’s first man home, earning himself a silver medal (for a time between six and seven-and-a-half hours) with a crushing time of seven hours, 15 minutes and 31 seconds.

Thirty-year-old Michael Pappas from BNAC also earned a coveted silver medal with his blitz-quick arrival time of seven hours, 26 minutes and 24 seconds.

The 55-year-old machine of a runner that is Dieter Stapel wrapped up the silver medal haul for Northerns with a time of seven hours, 29 minutes and 38 seconds.

Bill Rowan medals from the club (for a time between seven-and-a-half hours and sub nine hours) were achieved by Winston Smith, Melinda Jansen van Vuuren (also the first woman home from BNAC), Reginald Khanyi, Segole Pond Tsoka, Stephen Msimango, Gunter Stapel, Mark Dingle, Sipho Dumakude, Mpho Pilusa, Malcolm Vining, Themba Msibi, Matthew Willis, Grant Wright, Obakeng Moses, David Monareng, Chas Todd, Enock Mohodi, Marc Daniel and Eric Ladbrooke (who also earned his green number for 10 Comrades finishes).

A smaller Benoni Harriers Athletic Club (BHAC) contingent made it to Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Their notable results are:

Twenty-four-year-old Benjamin Skosana scooped the first silver medal of two for the club with a sublime time of seven hours and two minutes followed by Fanie Mphuthi who earned silver with a time of seven hours, 24 minutes and three seconds.

Armstrong Khoza, Hendrik Kotze, Sibusiso Mngomezulu and Riccardo Origa all earned Bill Rowan Medals for BHAC.

Khamini Singh was the rose among the thorns as she was the sole woman to finish the race from BHAC.

Nineteen runners from Daveyton Hearts Athletic Club also finished the ‘Big C’.

Two Hearts runners secured two silver medals for their club.

The ever-powerful Johnny Mokgoko arrived at the finish with a time of seven hours, 18 minutes and three seconds while Clement Modisha was the next man in for Hearts with a time of seven hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds.

Khomotso Comfort Malatji and Patrick Sentsho earned Bill Rowan Medals.

Benoni High Athletic Club had two runners finish the race.

Dustin Grace was the first finisher with a time of 10 hours, 14 minutes and 39 seconds followed my Mark Spigolon who came in at 11 hours, 22 minutes and 38 seconds.
