Watch out Comrades, Harriers are coming

Go! Go! Go! Harriers!

It’s all systems go for Benoni Harriers Athletic Club (BHAC) and their 2018 Comrades Marathon contingent.

The oldest athletic club in Benoni will have 42 runners lining up at the start of the ‘Ultimate Human Race’ on the morning of June 10 at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall ahead of a 90.184km down run journey to the finish at the new finish at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The club celebrated, motivated and paid tribute to the road warriors who have decided to take on the great race with their annual pre-Comrades breakfast at their new home, Benoni Country Club on May 27.

A 10km run took place ahead of the breakfast with chairman Ashvin Jivan leading the final 5km from his home in Mackenzie Park.

Of the 42 Harriers who will take on the ‘Big C’, there will only be three women who will brave the mighty ultra-marathon. They are Khamini Singh, Tina Pretorius and Nancy Dickson.

Eight novice runners from BHAC (Khamini Singh, Callan Peters, Jason Rajagaupaul, Julian Rajagaupaul, David Mbele, Jurie Pieterse, Rudi Craps and Joseph Zita) will make their Comrades debuts.

Grandmaster Theo Swanepoel will be the only member of BHAC going for a 10th finish to earn his name in the coveted Green Number Club.

Other notable runners on the KwaZulu-Natal road will be James Reid (going for 27 finishes), Kishore Magan (going for 19 finishes), Dawie du Toit (going for 19 finishes), Jasper Aiden (going for 17 finishes) and Hendrik Pretorius (going for 14 finishes).

Chairman Jivan wished his members and all the supporters who will heading down to Comrades the best of luck.
