Old Bens get the ‘W’ in Germiston

An important win on the road for Old Bens.

After a loss and draw in their last two Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League matches, Old Bens Football Club’s first XI got back to winning form with a 3-0 win over Germiston City in Delville, Germiston, on May 12.

The club’s Reserve XI drew 2-2 with their Germiston opponents in the earlier clash.

Themba Vilakazi and Sabelo ‘Chilli’ Mathula (a brace) scored the goals for the men from Benoni to give the team a much-needed lift with three points in the bag.

With plenty of matches still left to play in the league, coach Raymond Cloete believes his team can at least secure a top three position.

“We have scored the most goals in the league and have conceded the least,” said the coach.

“We have the best goals per game average, but need to be consistent when we do lead matches.”

Bens were too strong for their hosts on Saturday.

The team was expecting a tough match considering that Germiston had defeated Randburg and drew with Benoni Northern and league-leaders Luso Africa in previous meetings.

Bens won a penalty in the first stanza after 20 minutes.

Mathula converted the place kick which set the tone for the victory.

According to Cloete, in the second period, he added an additional defender to the ranks to quell a bit of pressure from the home side.

“I introduced a quicker striker and it paid off as we scored two goals on the counter attack,” said Cloete.

His boys will enjoy some time off this Saturday (May 19) as they have a bye week.

They will then play Linhill Celtic at Currin Park on May 26.
