Benoni Northerns Rugby Club tastes victory

The club got a double dosage of victories.

That sweet taste of victory was finally savoured by the boys from Benoni Northerns Rugby Club when their first and second teams emerged as winners for the first time this campaign.

Playing at Nigel Rugby Club’s Club Day on April 21, both teams squared up against Meyerton in the respective Valke Merlin Reserve League and Merlin League match-ups.

It was the third league fixture for the Benoni boys of the season.

Benoni’s second XV were dominant in the scrums and had a good game overall, winning 24-17.

They generated solid pressure on their opponents, evident by the fact that Meyerton could not catch one high ball due to Benoni’s good chasing.

It was a day to remember for the big men of the front row, both prop forwards Rudolf ‘Panda’ van Loggerenberg and Colin Pretorius crossing the whitewash for tries.

On the first team front, Benoni was involved in a fast-paced clash.

They found themselves 0-7 down in the first few minutes of the encounter due to an intercept try from Meyerton’s eighth man.

They soon gained the lead and led for the remainder of the game with vital tries from Jay Botha, a superb hat-trick from Marcel Redelinghuys, two tries and four conversions from Ruan ‘Doepie’ du Plessis and two tries from Robert Patterson to set up a much-needed 48-32 win.

The league will break for the long weekend followed by a bye-week for the Benoni teams.
