How the Benonians of Team SA fared at the Commonwealth Games

Benoni was well represented in Australia.

Colleen Piketh did Benoni proud by winning two medals at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, but there were also other Benonians who represented Team SA at the Commonwealth Games.

They could unfortunately not bring home any medals.

These are their performances:

• Ruhan Nel (Sevens rugby): The former Hoërskool Brandwag learner and the Blitzboks team were devastated to lose 21-14 late into the bronze medal play-off match against England. Nel scored a try as the Blitzboks led 14-0 at half-time in that clash.

• Pierre Basson (air rifle shooting): Another former Hoërskool Brandwag learner taking part in the Games, Basson (20) finished 15th in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting qualifiers.

• Michelle Butler-Emmett (badminton): The Farrarmere resident represented Team SA in mixed doubles and women’s doubles. The mixed doubles team lost 0-5 vs Australia, lost 0-5 vs England, won 5-0 vs Uganda. In the mixed doubles round of 64, Butler-Emmett and Cameron Coetzer accounted for Mauritius with a score of 2-1. They then went down 0-2 to Canada in the next mixed doubles match. In women’s doubles round of 32, the Benonian and Elmé de Villiers, defeated he Falkland Islands in straight sets. In the round of 16, their run came to an end, going down 0-2 to Sri Lanka after a good fight.

• Jethro Eustice (field hockey): The former Benoni Northerns Junior Hockey Club (BNJH) player and the men’s national hockey team only won one match on the Gold Coast. They were defeated 2-4 by Scotland, 0-4 by Australia, 0-6 by New Zealand and won 2-0 against Canada in the pool stage.

In the play-off match for ninth or 10th position, the South Africans got the ‘wooden spoon’, losing 2-3 to Wales.
