Old Bens win, Northerns don’t play

Old Bens pick up three points while Northerns are rained out.

A number of Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league football matches were unable to be played on March 24 with waterlogged and rain-drenched fields across the region forcing postponements of matches.

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s Super League and Super Reserve league sides were scheduled to play against Kempton Park, but the matches were postponed to a later date, due to a soaked pitch.

One team that did manage to get a game in on Saturday is Old Bens Football Club’s Super League XI who played Boksburg Football Club at the City Stadium in Boksburg.

The club’s reserve team received the full three points after Boksburg were unable to field a reserve side.

The first side, despite missing a number of regulars, comfortably secured a 4-0 win in a match that coach Raymond Cloete described as “tougher than expected”.

Lesego “Wii Man” Mlangeni, Sibusiso “Xavi” Mkhwanazi, Sabelo “Chilli” Methule and Thabiso “Moto” Sekgokodi got their names on the score sheet for Old Bens.

“Boksburg played some good football, but couldn’t finish their chances,” said Cloete.

“I am happy with the result.

“We were lucky to get a game in because of all the rain that forced postponements.

“We were a bit disjointed because we were missing some regular players, but the players who helped out performed well.

“Not having had the match postponed will help our schedule,” said the coach.

The team will play Bedfordview Country Club at Currin Park in their next league fixture on April 7.
