Northerns coach frustrated, but happy with win

The coach expected a lot more from his players, despite the victory.

You cannot blame Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) first XI coach Jannie van den Berg for expecting a lot from his team – that’s just what coaches do.

Despite a 2-1 victory away from home over Bedfordview in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League on March 10, van den Berg believes that his side could have played and gelled better on the day.

Even though the history books will record it as three points to BNFC, their coach believes there is still a long way to go in terms of combination play between his players and the finishing of chances from good build-up play (a number who are young newcomers to his set-up).

“We didn’t play particularly well, but we won,” he said.

“I’m not sure why [we didn’t play well].

“We had a good week of preparation and the boys were fired up for the game.

“Maybe the opposition surprised us, but nothing seemed to work for us.

“We struggled to finish off moves, so perhaps it was bad execution from our side.

“Sometimes you play poorly and win, so we will take the three points.

“It was a frustrating day, but I’m happy to get with the away win.”

Midfielder Mothoka ‘Stoaney’ Moeketsi opened the scoring for BNFC while left-back Sean Humphries converted from a set piece.

Coach Darren Lee’s Reserve XI achieved a second straight win with a 3-1 victory in Bedfordview.

Northerns’ Super League and Super Reserve League sides continue their travels on March 17 when they play Zwide United at the Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong.
