Country Club’s champions crowned

Some terrific golf was played on a course in tremendous condition.

There was much excitement at Benoni Country Club (BCC) over the weekend of March 3 and 4 when golfing members teed off in the annual BCC Club Championships, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.

According to BCC CEO Darren Millington, the course was in superb condition.

“Many thanks must go to the course staff headed by Deon Becker, the Ekurhuleni Golf Union course superintendent of the year for 2017.

“They really put on a spectacular display for the 178 entries.”

The men’s A-division got off to an early start on Saturday, and by the time the 18 holes were up young Ryan van Velzen (16) was trailing fellow club golfer Stevie du Toit by two shots.

Further back by four shots were Warrick Purchase and Jordan Prytz.

In the women’s division, Colleen Pike was top of the leader board after completion of the first round.

The draw was reversed for day two, which saw the women out early on Sunday morning.

It was the talented Alice Rich who soared up the leader board with a few birdies on the front nine to take the title of Women’s Club Champion for 2018.

The men were out on the course in the afternoon and it got extremely close, coming down to the last few holes.

Van Velzen had managed to get back into contention against du Toit.

As the last putt was sunk the two were all square, and it was off to an exciting play-off down the 18th hole.

The two pegged it up and the play-off was on for the 2018 championship.

While du Toit missed his putt, van Velzen successfully birdied the first play-off hole to be crowned the 2018 Benoni Country Club Champion.
