Northmead Tennis Club’s Nevay plays in the USA

Since 2005, Northmead Tennis Club member and Rynfield resident Kathy Nevay (79) has been taking part in the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) Super Seniors World Championships.

This year the septuagenarian again flew the Gauteng East and South African flags in the team event at the recent 2017 championships alongside compatriots Reiko Murase (Gauteng Central), Elsie Goosen (Gauteng North) and Jackie Zylstra (KwaZulu-Natal) in Lake Nona, Florida in the USA.

It was always going to be a tough proposition for the South African women as they were drawn in a pool with Britain, France and Australia.

The team finished bottom of the pool but achieved a win in a cross-pool match against Sweden followed by another defeat to Australia over five days of competitive senior tennis.

“I’ve learned to read other peoples’ games at these events and watch the other teams when I get a chance,” she said.

Nevay, who turns 80 next year, will look to play in the 80 years old and older category at next year’s tournament set to be played in Croatia.

“I am extremely grateful to still be fit and strong,” she said, adding that working in her garden contributes to her good health.

“Running with the lawnmower helps keep you fit, but not quite fit enough for tennis, so I still have to work hard on the court.”

The sprightly senior can be found at the Northmead club six days a week and passes on her knowledge and wisdom to juniors with coaching sessions on Friday afternoons.

“I love helping children learn the game,” she added.

Any children interested in playing the sport and receiving coaching can contact Nevay on 011 969 1794.
