Locals clean up in Ireland

The United Martial Arts International Dojo participated in the World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships in Ireland recently.

The championship was tough with about 15 countries participating from around the world.

“The standard of fighting was extremely high as the rules stipulate good, clean and solid contact,” said Shihan Aslam Mohamed, chief instructor of the United Martial Arts Dojo Benoni.

“Your body has to be well conditioned to participate at the world championships.

“Our Benoni heroes made South Africa proud by winning 35 medals at the WMO World Championships,” he added.

The shihan won six gold medals and three silver medals himself while his children Mahmood (won six gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals), Ahmad (won five gold medals and four silver) and Salaamah (the youngest competitor at the World Championships, won one gold medal, two silver medals and three bronze medals).

The eldest competitor at the worlds was kancho Allan Mahomed who won a gold medal and a silver medal in his age category.

“South Africa had the youngest and oldest competitor at the championships, a proud moment,” said Aslam.

The WMO South African team consisted of eight fighters and two officials.

The total medal count for Team WMO South Africa was 45.

The WMO South African Team coach was Sajida Mahomed who led the team to victory.

Team manager Hawa Manack took care of the entire team and made sure everyone was prepared for their respective divisions.

The next WMO World Championships will be held in Portugal in October 2018.
