So close for Smith at MotoX champs

Rynfield’s Slade Smith (16) raced in the final round of the South African National Motocross Championship at the Terratopia Circuit in Randburg recently.

Riding his ABE Midas 125cc motorbike in the formidable High School Class, also known as ‘the kamikaze pilots of MX’, Smith was out to perform at his best, and that he certainly did.

Having experienced some really bad luck at the opening round in Port Elizabeth at the start of the season, Smith had been chasing from behind in second place the whole season long.

Coming into the final round, he was 17 points behind the leader in the championship standings.

It was a big ask for the Benoni High School learner to win the championship in the last round, but not an impossibility.

He went out and won the first heat of the day in impeccable style, coming from third position in the first corner to win the heat outright.

That left him nine points behind going into the final heat for the overall championship for 2017.

He went out with a bang and got the holeshot.

It all looked so promising for Smith until an unfortunate fall set him back.

Still he got up and fought his heart out from almost last place to third in the heat, but it wasn’t to be as he ended the championship a mere eight points behind the overall winner.

He bowed out gracefully taking second overall in the championship for the year, and now has his sights on the 250cc MX2 class for next year.

The teenage riding sensation left for Florida in the USA on November 13, where he will once again compete in the Mini O’s US MX Championship.
