BNCC batter Spurs in Benoni battle

The first 50-over format Benoni cricket derby of the season, between the Premier League teams of Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC) and Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC), took place at Lords Cricket Ground in Actonville on Sunday, November 5.

BNCC, fresh from a victory over Alberton the weekend prior, were looking to maintain winning ways against their fellow Benonians.

Coach Thomas Pekane’s Actonville XI, for their part, were striving to bounce back from defeat to Bedfordview in their last league fixture.

It wasn’t to be for the host team, however.

ASCC skipper Michael Enslin won the morning toss and put his opponents in to bat, in what would turn out to be an unfortunate decision.

BNCC’s left-handed opening duo of Ernest Kemm and Vaughn Humphrey kept the Actonville fielders busy for 23.3 overs before the latter was bowled for 70 runs from 79 deliveries with 140 runs on the board.

Kemm (seemingly out of favour for selection in the Easterns semi-professional ranks lately) scored a second successive century in the space of a week, top-scoring with 102 runs from 127 balls to knock down the door of the provincial selectors.

Number six batsman and BNCC skipper Kurt Francis played himself back into some form with a devastating 73 runs from 34 deliveries (four fours and six sixes) to guide his team to a big total of 316/6 from their 50 overs.

Actonville were punished further by the umpires for a slow over rate and had two overs deducted from their batting innings.

The hosts did not offer much of a threat with the willow and went about their reply slowly.

Apart from 36 runs from young Mekyle Pillay, there was not much on offer as Actonville’s 48 overs ran out with the score at 135/6 to give BNCC a 181-run win.

BNCC skipper Francis commented: “Once again ‘our wall’ Ernest Kemm showed Easterns why they are making a massive mistake by leaving him out.

“He showed his class with another ton, and it was great to see the returning Vaughn Humphrey show some form and set up a good platform at the top to allow the middle order to bat freely.

• Meanwhile, BNCC’s Promotion League XI also enjoyed victory on Sunday.

The team played Springs Old Boys at Pollak Park and comfortably won by seven wickets.

BNCC bowled out Springs for 151 runs in 29 overs and chased down the score in the 23rd over with three wickets down.
