Sunday of wins for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club‘s Prems, Promos

It was a Sunday of comfortable wins for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) in the Eastern Premier and Promotion leagues on October 29.

After having to share ‘rain points’ in their first scheduled 50-over format league match at home against Tembisa on October 22 Premier XI skipper Kurt Francis and his men were relieved to get a full match in when they travelled to the Lindeque Oval in Alberton on Sunday.

It was Easterns semi-professional Ernest Kemm whose all-round talents came to the fore to help set up a vital four-wicket win.

Batting first Alberton put together a score of 202/9 in 50 overs.

Kemm was among the wicket takers with figures of 2/22 in his allotted 10 overs followed by a returning Harley Steyn who bagged stats of 2/40 in his own overs.

Mark Robey, Stefano di Bartolomeo, Kundai Matigimu and WP Myburgh all contributed with a wicket apiece.

With the bat the left-handed opener Kemm calmly went about his business to score a well-deserved 103 runs.

His century and a late barrage from the veteran Robey (33 not out) helped steer the team to victory.

Francis commented on the win: “It was a big result for us as Alberton are definitely a team to be reckoned with.

“Individual brilliance with the bat and ball from our club pro Ernie always helps us win games, but our old dog Robey played a crucial knock at the back end of the innings to bring it home for us.

Tian van der Walt’s (stand-in Promotion XI skipper) team enjoyed victory against KwaThema at Northerns’ A-Field.

BNCC bowled out their visitors for 174 runs in 49.1 overs and chased the score down comfortably within 33 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Half-centuries from 15-year-old talent Thabiso Khumalo (70 not out) and van der Walt (58 not out) guided the ‘Promos’ to a second win of the campaign.

BNCC’s Premier XI will play local rivals Actonville Spurs in a Benoni cricket derby at Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville on November 5.

The first delivery is expected to be bowled at 10am.

The Promotion XI will travel to Springs Old Boys.
