Kleinfontein Bowling Club to celebrate centenary

Members and friends of the Kleinfontein Bowling Club in Mackenzie Park will celebrate their centenary this week with a full weekend of activities including a bowls tournament, live music, craft stalls, jumping castles and beer tents on Saturday and Sunday.

The club, founded in 1917 by the New Kleinfontein Company Ltd to create a sports and recreational centre for its employees, is the oldest bowling club in the Benoni area and is proud of its history.

The original green at the club was opened in 1917 and named after the then chairman of the mine, George Mackenzie, who remained the patron of the club until his death in 1963.

A second green was donated by the mine in 1963.

The green was named in honour of Wilfred Lloyd who was the mine manager from 1947 until his retirement in 1969.

His father, Harold Lloyd, was the first chairman of the club in 1926.

In 1991 the grounds and clubhouse facilities were donated to the members by the New Kleinfontein Company in dedication to all those employees who served on the mine from 1894 to 1968 when the mine finally closed.

Club chairman Marius Nepgen thanked all his members for their hard work throughout the year to improve the facilities and clubhouse to ensure the weekend is a success.

“We are not the biggest club in the district, but we are one of the strongest and most definitely one of the friendliest clubs,” he said.

“We pride ourselves in making all our visitors feel welcome and encourage them to enjoy themselves.

“With 96 bowlers taking part in the tournament, we are confident the weekend will be a success. Entry to the grounds is free and we invite people from the area to join us in the celebrations on either Saturday or Sunday.”
