Clubs come together to grow women’s golf

The Girls Love Golf development programme, which introduces previously disadvantaged young girls to the game of golf, will be running a clinic at the Ebotse Driving Range on Saturday, October 14, from 1pm to 3pm.

The clinic will outline the basics of golf.

The programme is spearheaded by Women’s Golf South Africa (WGSA), and Ekurhuleni Women’s Golf has been tasked with arranging the function this year.

Lynda Smit, co-ordinator of the day and Ebotse’s women’s golf captain, said that various clubs in the Ekurhuleni Golf Union (EGU) have collected golf apparel that will be distributed to the girls on the day.

“For example, Sherry Manners (women’s captain at Benoni Country Club) and Denise Labuschagne (women’s captain at The Lake Club Benoni) have contributed towards this joint effort by all local clubs,” she said.

Loyiso Barnes (development coach at the South African Golf Development Board) will assist with the coaching.

“Loyiso coaches about 15 children on a regular basis at Daveyton Golf Club and is responsible for entering and providing transport for these players to our junior tournaments held in our union.

“We are pleased that one of the u-13 players, Siyabonga Magubane, was recently selected to represent EGU at the u-13 Championship in Port Elizabeth.”

“Loyiso has boys playing in all three divisions: A-Division (nine handicap and better), B-Division (10 to 18 handicap) and C-Division (19 to 30 handicap) and they are progressing extremely well.

“Loyiso also assists us with the starting and marshalling of the players at our respective tournaments.”

Smit added that the public is welcome to attend and support the players on the day.
